FIELD: production technology.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to processing of natural titanium-containing raw material with production of rutile modification titanium dioxide, which is used in paint and lacquer and cellulose and paper industries, in production of plastics and rubber articles, as well as a universal bleaching agent in food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry. Ilmenite concentrate processing method involves its sulphatization, conversion of iron compounds to the solution and calcination at temperature in range from 870 to 900 °C. Sulphatization of the ilmenite concentrate with particle size of up to 40 mcm is carried out with ammonium sulphate which is mixed with the concentrate in weight ratio of ilmenite concentrate: ammonium sulphate equal to 1:(3–4). Obtained product is heated to calcination temperature at rate of 2.5 deg/min and held at the achieved temperature for 5.0–5.5 hours. Then, calcined product is treated with sulfuric acid solution with concentration of 20–25 g/l at T:I = 1:(5–10) with conversion of iron into soluble form. Titanium dioxide precipitate is obtained, which is filtered and washed with water.

EFFECT: invention increases efficiency of processing ilmenite concentrate by simplifying the process, reducing the number of steps and reducing costs.
