FIELD: organic chemistry. SUBSTANCE: 1,4-butanediol is prepared by reaction of ethylene with triethyl aluminium in the presence of catalysts Cp2ZrCl2 and Bu2AlH and γ in 1:(2-4) ratio at room temperature for 12-16 hours followed by oxidation and hydrolysis of reaction mixture. Said compound is prepared for manufacturing thermoplastic material such as polybutylene terephthalate useful as constructional material in automobile manufacture, electrical engineering or in other industries 1,4-butene diol is used in large quantities for preparing 8-butyrolaclone, N- methyl and N-vinyl pyrrolidones widely used in pharmaceutical, cosmetic, textile, food, paint and electronic industries.
