FIELD: mechanical engineering; making of cutting tools. SUBSTANCE: friction welding is carried out within superductility temperature range of one of blanks to be welded together. Heating pressure is applied in pulses. Duration of first heating pressure pulse is limited by superductility temperature on surface of welded butt joint. Number of applied pressure pulses and pauses and their duration are determined by levelling superductility temperature of metal over entire area of butt joint. Heating pressure in pause is 40-60% of pulse pressure. EFFECT: improved stability, strength and quality of welded joints. 2 cl
