FIELD: inorganic chemistry; chemical technology. SUBSTANCE: phosphates of rare-earth metals are reduced with the help of carbon, its quantity being 120-140 % of stoichiometric amount being necessary for reduction of phosphorous pentoxide. The process is carried out at 1350-1400 C, phosphorous being converted into gaseous phase. Desired product is obtained as phosphorous-free rare-earth product as oxides of rare-earth metal being easily soluble in mineral acids. EFFECT: decreased temperature of the process; decreased amount of reducing agent; simplified scheme for further processing of desired product. 1 tbl
