FIELD: computer engineering. SUBSTANCE: method involves representation of object image as input digital matrix which elements correspond to values of intensity or density of signal which is output by object, selection of size of window through which input matrix is viewed depending on object texture. Said window size is less than input matrix by at least factor of two. Window movement step is assigned to value of window size. Then at least one texture characteristic which describes object texture is selected and value of selected characteristic is detected primarily for initial position of window and then for each windows. Interval of values of at least one calculated texture characteristic is split into at least two subintervals to which a code is assigned. Calculated value of texture characteristic in each window of input matrix is compared against belonging to corresponding subinterval and this window with calculated value of texture characteristic is encoded with code of corresponding subinterval. This results in output matrix which elements correspond to windows of input matrix. Finally at least one characteristic which describes group of elements of output matrix with equal code is selected and value of selected characteristic is calculated in order to identify texture of object.
