FIELD: production of metallic magnesium. SUBSTANCE: magnesium oxide or corresponding precursor of magnesium oxide may be dissolved in molten salt bath containing cations of magnesium, cations of rare-earth element and fluoride anions, and obtained bath containing magnesium is subjected to electrolysis to produce alloy of magnesium and rare-earth element or metallic magnesium. Despite the fact that alloy of magnesium and rare-earth element is precious by itself, a method is offered to produce magnesium from the alloy by successive electrolysis of melt containing fluoride anions and then, melt containing chloride anions. Method allows production of metallic magnesium from easily available and moderately priced magnesium oxide. EFFECT: higher efficiency. 9 cl, 3 dwg
