Nonlinear element 1 is in its nonlinear region but when adequately excited by two or more AC signals of different frequencies 4,12,13,41,42,113, and 114, it produces additional frequencies which return from far end to near one of cable pair 2,10,24, and 133, and characteristics of the latter are modified. Characteristics of cable pair 2,10,24, and 133 can be obtained by proper selection of exciting frequencies and measurement of characteristics of additional returned frequencies 6,22,52, and 200.
