FIELD: measurement technology. SUBSTANCE: method includes generation of electromagnetic energy in microwave range, transmission of energy in motor fuel medium, measurement of phase difference between microwave oscillation at input and output of line of electromagnetic energy transmission in motor fuel. In this case, octane number comparison is performed by dependence of phase shift value of microwave signal passed through motor fuel from value of motor fuel octane number, which enables instantaneous indication of tested fuel octane number deviation from that of standard specimen.
