FIELD: INORGANIC SYNTHESIS. SUBSTANCE: invention can be used in preparative syntheses of sulfides and polysulfides of metals belonging to primary and secondary subgroups of periodical system and also relates to semiconductor material technology. Sulfides are precipitated in anhydrous liquid medium containing alkanes with at least 10 carbon atoms via interaction of metal compounds (hydroxides, acetates, fatty acid salts) with hydrogen sulfide formed in the course of reaction. Method is distinguished by combining formation of hydrogen sulfide and its consumption in situ to form sulfide compound. Process is carried out in boiling hydrocarbons at 170 to 250 C. This temperature range covers boiling temperatures of decane, dodecane, tridecane, and tetradecane. When using light hydrocarbons (pentane, hexane), synthesis of sulfides is performed in autoclave. At optimum synthesis temperatures, equilibrium pressure of vapors of volatile alkanes lies within the range 1.0 to 6.3 MPa. According to invention, crystalline modifications of zinc, cobalt, copper, barium and other metals are prepared for 4-8 h with yields from 77 to 99%. EFFECT: enhanced process efficiency. 2 cl, 1 tbl
