FIELD: chemical power sources. SUBSTANCE: method is used when preparing composition based on intermetallic compound LaNi5 capable of reversibly absorbing hydrogen utilized in chemical power sources (metal hydride accumulators). Initial lanthanum and nickel compounds are thermally treated in inert atmosphere in presence of reducing agent. According to invention, initial compounds are anhydrous lanthanum and nickel chlorides and nickel metal powder taken in stoichiometric amounts, and reducing agent is lithium hydride. Thermally treated reaction mass is washed out by cooled water and dried. EFFECT: simplified procedure. 3 cl
