FIELD: metallurgy, more specifically, vacuum arc melting of refractory metals; may be used in manufacture of consumable electrodes in production of castings from titanium alloys with utilization of foundry wastes. SUBSTANCE: method consists in that lumpy wastes are placed in sheet gage adjacent to internal surface of mold. Sheet gage has end flat templets made from material homogeneous with that of charge material. Welding is carried out by passing electric current applied to templets through the entire layer of lumpy material up to its fusion in points of contact with concurrent application of axial force from top for moving lumpy wastes down over gage height as soon as they melt. For reliable welding of lumpy wastes, they are melted in the amount of not less than 10-15% of their total weight. EFFECT: extended range of sizes of lumpy materials used in manufacture of consumable electrodes, simplified and accelerated process of their production. 3 cl, 1 dwg
