FIELD: butt welding of rolled products. SUBSTANCE: welding is accomplished by a flat fusible insulated electrode, that is made to the shape of the butt, in air atmosphere. One pole of current source is connected to the electrode, and the other is connected to the product. Electric arc is excited between the electrode end and product. The current source power required for welding is determined by formula: q(t) = cF(t)Pme/G(W), where C - sound velocity in electrode material, cm/s; F(t) - cross-section area of electrode end at the level of welding bath, sq.cm; Pme - value of excessive pressure of metallic vapors, g/sq.cm; G - dimensionless Gruneisen coefficient, and it is changed in the process of welding proportionally to cross-section F(t). The device welding current regulator has an armature and a drive. The transducer of slag bath displacement along the butt of products with a rule of light-sensitive elements is installed on the same base with the products to be welded, with the rule of light- sensitive elements along the butt. The transducer output is connected to the input of the drive of the electrode width meter, and the output of the electrode width meter is connected to the input of the welding current regulator drive, which is kinematically linked with the armature.
