FIELD: mechanical engineering; welding of thick workpieces. SUBSTANCE: consumable insulated electrode is placed in butt joint of workpieces to be welded and it fixed in position. Electrode shape is made to suit shape of butt joint. One pole of current source is connected to electrode. Second pole is connected to workpieces to be welded. Required gauge pressure of metal vapors in welding pool is chosen from range of 1.5-2.0 atm. Minimum power of current source required for welding is found by formula q=CFP/G, W where C - is sound velocity in electrode material, cm/s; F is electrode cross section area, cm2; P is metallic vapor gauge pressure, g/cm2; G is Gruneizen nondimensional coefficient. Electric arc is started between electrode workpieces to be welded. Corresponding values of current and voltage are set. Arc moves automatically and spontaneously along electrode end face. Weld molten metal is cooled by transmitting pool heat to workpiece. Extinction of arc at the end of butt joint occurs automatically. EFFECT: enhanced stability of process, improved quality of weld joint. 3 cl, 3 dwg
