FIELD: study of materials. SUBSTANCE: pump rod is deformed by longitudinal loading in region of elastic deformation, straight indicating line is marked with paint on surface of pump rod in parallel to longitudinal axis and pump rod is subjected to torsion. Visual control of trajectory of indicating line by which presence of defect in metal is judged is carried out. After removal of torque pump rods having passed through test are subjected to continuation of longitudinal loading in region of elastoplastic deformation up to value not exceeding ultimate strength of material of pump rod and torsion is conducted in same region. Torque and longitudinal loading are removed and visual control of trajectory of indicating line by which presence of defect in metal is judged is carried out. EFFECT: provision for proximate analysis with sufficient authenticity of exposure of structural inhomogeneity of metal both of ferromagnetic and nonferromagnetic articles. 1 tbl
