FIELD: ferrous metallurgy; methods of direct production of iron by reduction of its oxides with solid carbon in liquid slag bath. SUBSTANCE: method includes measurement of total difference of potentials developed by electromotive forces by concurrently occurring redox reactions between ground and electrode-current collector, insulated from ground, by oxidizing gas atmosphere and immersed in oxide melt in slag siphon at a distance (1.1-2.2) H of metal layer thickness on unit bottom. Method allows to provide for development of inertialess continuous method of monitoring processes with simultaneously occurring redox reactions based on registration and analysis of total potential difference arising in the period of operation of pyrometallurgical unit in electric circuit: electrode-current collector - measuring instrument - ground - slag bath - electrode-current collector.
