FIELD: light industry. SUBSTANCE: method involves applying pattern on billet; surrounding contours of large parts composed of set of small parts with cutter having elongate polished off face and made double-edged; cutting slots on small parts in the direction toward surrounded contours by means of chisels having blade width corresponding to width of part to be presented, with slot being cut with one pass of chisel. During passage of chisel held with one hand over pattern part, face is pressed into formed track by finger of other hand. Method further involves cutting slots in large parts with one pass of chisel, with large parts contours being preliminarily surrounded by means of cutter and chisel blade widths being selected in accordance with that of part to be produced; completing small parts by making vertical wood cut by means of the same chisel. Part contours are surrounded at an angle to billet surface oriented inward or outward relative to contour. Portions disposed outside contour surrounded at outward oriented angle may be further surrounded at inward oriented angle. Method allows light openwork carving pattern composed of plant parts combined with ornaments or figures of animals, birds, insects to be obtained. Methods for teaching carving and classifying chisels used in carving process are recited in Specifications.
