FIELD: tobacco industry, in particular, drying or increasing moisture content of tobacco or other hygroscopic organic materials. SUBSTANCE: method involves conditioning tobacco with flow of air having relative humidity approximating to tobacco equilibrium condition. As volatile content in tobacco is increases, relative humidity of air flow coming into contact with tobacco mass is also increased. Method further involves drying tobacco by treating it with air flow having relative humidity corresponding to or below tobacco equilibrium condition. As volatile content in tobacco is reduced, relative humidity of air flow coming into contact with tobacco mass is also reduced.
