FIELD: material engineering. SUBSTANCE: invention provides either increased durability of a tool in a specified phase of its operation if the tool is preliminarily treated, or preliminarily modifying properties of material from which a tool is to be manufactured. In a method where object is exposed to loading for a certain period of time and then thermally treated, reference specimens are preliminarily exposed to different types of operational loadings in order to register graphically alterations in the state of substructures of specimens as function of loading duration. From plotted graphs, one can find required duration of loading that is to be applied to object. More specifically, density of material is utilized to characterize state of material substructure. Heat treatment is conducted at tempering temperature and simultaneously material surface is saturated with chemical elements. EFFECT: improved treatment efficiency. 5 cl, 2 dwg
