FIELD: sorbents. SUBSTANCE: invention is designed to prepare wear- resistant microspherical aluminum oxide useful as adsorbent, catalyst, and catalyst carrier when carrying out processes in fluidized and moving catalyst layers. Product consists of solid solution of Me2+ and/or Me3+ metal ions in aluminum oxide at Al3+ to Me2+ and/or to Me3+ ratio between 200:1 and 20:1, where Me2+ are II group metal ions and also Mn2+ and Cu2+, and Me3+ is Ce3+ or Ca3+. Preparation procedure: solid solution is prepared by hydration of amorphous oxygen-containing aluminum compound in presence of Me2+ and/or Me3+ compounds and acid followed by filtration, drying, and heat treatment at 500-850 C. Process is carried out at following ratios of components assuring formation of above-mentioned solid solution: Al/Me2+ from 200:1 to 20:1 and acid/Al2O3 not higher than 0.1.
