FIELD: chemistry of polymers. SUBSTANCE: polyisobutylene and isobutylene-olefin copolymers are prepared by polymerization and copolymerization of isobutylene in hydrocarbon solvent in the presence of Lewis acid modifier and subsequently stopperifying, decalcifying and degasifying polymer (copolymer). Lewis acid is complex of titanium tetrachloride (A) with triisobutyl aluminium (TIBA) in combination with modifier at A to TIBA to modifier molar ratio from 1:0.05:0.01 to 1:1:1, or complex (C) of titanium tetrachloride with alkylaluminium halide (B) individually, or the same complex (C) in combination with modifier at modifier to Lewis acid molar ratio of 0.01: 1 to 1:1. Modifier is 2,6-ditertbutyl, 4-methylphenol, 2,2-methylene-bis (4- methyl-6-tert-butylphenol), tetraethoxysilane, boron trifluoride, polyisobutylene or isobutylene-diene copolymers are prepared at low catalyst amounts and elevated temperature, and (co)polymers are prepared with lower ash content and low-molecular weight fraction having high transparency.
