FIELD: metallurgy. SUBSTANCE: synthesis gas is mixed with top gas produced in direct reduction of material containing iron oxides, and obtained mixture is used as reducing gas for direct reduction and heating of material containing iron oxides up to reduction temperature. To maintain the preset content of H2S by relatively simple methods and with the help of relatively simple equipment at least one part of sulfur contained in material containing iron oxides together with blast-furnace gas is added to reducing gas in the form of H2S formed in heating and direct reduction. Synthesis gas may be used in the form of the following gases: effluent gas of oxygen converters and electric arc furnaces, blast-furnace gas, top gas of Korex plants, coal gas, gas from smelting gasifiers of Korex plant, chemical gases. EFFECT: reduced or excluded metal corrosion (metal dusting) by regulation of H2S with enough accuracy and low expenditures and cut down cost. 12 cl, 1 dwg, 6 tbl
