FIELD: measurement technology. SUBSTANCE: invention is meant for realization of magnetostrictive displacement converters. In correspondence with proposed method time of propagation of ultrasonic wave from immobile excitation element to mobile read-out element linked to monitored object is measured. Value of this time is used to evaluate linear travel of object. Mobile read-out element is placed at closest distance from immobile excitation element prior to measurement of time of propagation of ultrasonic wave and model duration of pulse of ultrasonic wave is measured. Working duration of pulse of ultrasonic wave is measured after travel of mobile read-out element together with monitored object over measured distance before each measurement of time of propagation of ultrasonic wave, it is subtracted from model duration and value of obtained difference is used to determine value of current of mobile excitation element.
