FIELD: biochemistry. SUBSTANCE: pyridin-2-one or pyridin-2-thione derivatives of formula I: C1-C20 wherein Y is O, S or HN; R is C1-C20-alkyl, A is oxygen or sulfur, provided that R is other than chlorobenzyl, have antimicrobial activity. Compounds (I), wherein Y is oxygen, and A is sulfur, are prepared by reacting 2,6- dichloropyridine-N-oxide with hydroxy compound, such as phenol or -alcohol, and base and subsequently treating the resulting compound with sulfur-containing base. Compounds (I), wherein Y is NH and H is sulfur, are prepared by reacting 2,6-dichloropyridine-N- oxide with primary amine and base, and subsequently treating the resulting product with hyrosulfide salt. Compounds (I) wherein y is sulfur and A is sulfur are prepared by reacting 2,6-dichloropyridine-N- oxide with thiol compound such as mercaptan and base, and subsequently treating the resulting product with hydrosulfide salt of compound (I), wherein A is oxygen and Y is NH, are prepared by reacting 2,6-dichloropyridine-N-oxide with primary amine and base and subsequently treating the resulting product with base. Compound (I), wherein A is oxygen and Y is oxygen or sulfur, are prepared by reacting 2,6-dichloropyridine- N- oxide hydroxy compound or thiol compound and based followed by treatment of the resulting product with base. Antimicrobial composition comprises effective amount of compound of formula (I) as active ingredient. Method of suppressing growth of microorganisms comprises contacting microorganisms with effective amount of antimicrobial composition.
