FIELD: nonferrous metallurgy; applicable in preparation of carnallite for production of magnesium by electrolysis. SUBSTANCE: method includes heat treatment of chlorides in continuous four-chamber fluidized-bed apparatus with flue gases containing hydrogen chloride which is fed to all chambers of apparatus. Content of hydrogen chloride in heat carrier supplied to each next chamber exceeds that in preceding chamber by factor of 1.02-4. Temperature in the first chamber is maintained sufficient for removal from initial material of four molecules of water, while in the second chamber, sufficient for removal of 1-1.5 molecules of water, and in the third chamber, sufficient for removal of 0.1-1 molecule of water.
