FIELD: systems for optical remote detection of objects, particularly for executing operations with barrels including hazard material. SUBSTANCE: metallic barrel has closed upper portion whose outer surface has first and second zones with different optical reflection properties. First zone may be reflecting, second zone - - absorbing one. Metallic barrel may be cylindrical with concentric above mentioned zones whose centers coincide with axis of barrel. Body of barrel is in the form of straight circular cylinder or it is approximated by such cylinder. Method comprises steps of using optical irradiation detector and analyzing its output signal for detecting interface between said zones and calculating position of barrel center.
