FIELD: gas treatment. SUBSTANCE: sulfur dioxide is removed from gas, in particular, from furnace gas, with the aid of aqueous suspension of an absorbent, preferably limestone. Furnace gas is passed through perforated plate 3, on which flowing layer of absorbent suspension is provided with static height equal to at least about 100 mm, preferably about 200-500 mm, and volume equal to about 50-500 l as calculated for 1 cu.m of furnace gas passing through layer per 1 s. Absorbent suspension layer flows across perforated plate 3 with flow velocity about 5-100 l/s, preferably about 10-30 l/s calculated for static volume through which 1 cu.m/s of sulfur dioxide- containing gas flows. Apparatus comprises inlet (1) and outlet (2) openings for furnace gas; perforated plate 3; reservoir 5 for absorbent suspension; at least one inlet pipe 6 located between reservoir 5 and perforated plate 3; means 8,10,11,12 for supplying absorbent suspension; at least one outlet pipe 7 to recycle absorbent suspension from perforated plate 3 into reservoir 5; and means 9,12,13,14,16 to supply air, absorbent and water and to remove gypsum. EFFECT: increased degree of absorption and efficiency of its utilization and reduced power consumption. 10 cl, 4 dwg
