FIELD: solid-state and high-energy physics. SUBSTANCE: magnet has metal insert, external pulsed solenoid coaxially arranged relative to the former, and two primary superconducting solenoids mounted on ends of insert. Superconducting solenoids are supplied with power from emf source. After desired current is set up in superconducting solenoids, switches that short them out are changed over to superconducting state due to disconnection of electric heater. Then electric heater located close to coil section of superconducting solenoid is turned on. This section acquires normal state under the effect of heat and voltage built up across it is applied to pulsed solenoid. Pulsed field set up in the process induces eddy currents in metal insert whose interaction with pulsed field induces electrodynamic forces which compress insert together with magnetic field produced by superconducting solenoid. EFFECT: simplified design due to dispensing with capacitor bank. 1 dwg
