FIELD: synthesis-gas production. SUBSTANCE: mixture of crude gaseous hydrocarbon material with oxidant and steam is subjected to partial oxidation by compressing preheated mixture to provide spontaneous ignition conditions in internal combustion engine cylinder space when piston moves toward top dead center. Mixture is then expanded when piston moves toward lower dead center, cooled, and synthesis gas-containing product is withdrawn from reaction space. In following cycles, new portions of mixture are used. According to invention, initial mixture is supplied into cylinder with excess oxidant ratio below 0.5. When piston reaches top dead center, mixture is locally heated to ensure steady ignition. EFFECT: increased productivity and product quality. 2 cl, 1 dwg, 1 tbl
