FIELD: chemical industry. SUBSTANCE: method comprises using serpentine product containing 80-95 wt % of serpentine minerals with particle size of 0.02-0.20 mm as agent for treatment of water at agent consumption of 0.1-5.0 g/l. Prior to treatment of water, agent is subjected to thermal activation at 650-820 C. Method allows for propound purification of open water reservoirs from turning sour and from heavy metal ions and prevents secondary contamination. Residual concentrations of heavy metals are either lower that permissible concentrations or close to permissible concentration values. EFFECT: more efficient purification method. 10 ex, 10 tbl
