EXHAUST GAS CATALYST CONVERTER AND METHOD OF ITS MANUFACTURE Russian patent published in 1999 - IPC

FIELD: mechanical engineering; exhaust systems of internal combustion engines. SUBSTANCE: converter has housing with inlet and outlet branch pipes axially mounted in housing, catalyst monoblocks, thermally expanding gasket placed in clearance between housing wall and monoblocks and gasket end face hermetic seal made in form of heat resistant glue coating applied to gasket end faces to protect gasket material from destructive action of exhaust gases. Method of manufacturing comes to fitting of pre-assembled catalyst monoblock with thermally expanding gasket into converter semihousing, connecting of second semihousing with pre-assembled first semihousing, applying of force to pre-assembled semihousing to provide their tight contact through flanges and subsequent welding of semihousings. Prior to pre-assembling of catalyst monoblock with thermal expanding gasket, layer of glue is applied to end face surfaces of gasket and gasket coated with glue is held for 15-20 min for partial polymerization of glue. Final polymerization to provide nondetachable adhesion of gasket with semihousing takes place at application of force to provide pressing of semihousing to each other, force being removed after complete gluing of gasket to semihousings. EFFECT: enhanced reliability and increased service life of catalyst converter, simplified assembling, reduced metal usage and cost of product. 3 cl, 4 dwg
