FIELD: industrial organic synthesis. SUBSTANCE: ethylene oxide is hydrated at its molar ratio to water from 1:2 to 1:8 by portionwise adding ethylene oxide to reaction mixture and controlling concentration of ethylene oxide within a range of 5.0-20.0 wt % at 90-140 C. Under these conditions, selectivity of process with respect to monoethylene glycol ranges from 70 to 84 mol % and resulting product is suitable for production of synthetic fibers.
