FIELD: road safety. SUBSTANCE: height of tread of tires is measured by means of laser measurement head carrying laser which is so placed relative to tire of motor vehicle that its datum surface occupies certain position with reference to tire. Laser beam is directed through datum surface at some angle on to bottom of pattern of tread of tire so that light spot is formed on it. Transmitter displaying certain resolution determines position of light spot that is used to obtain measure of height of tread of tire. EFFECT: improved authenticity of current test of height of pattern of tread of tire. 10 cl, 9 dwg
