FIELD: organic chemistry, biochemistry. SUBSTANCE: method of enzymatic hydrolysis of 4-methylthiobutyronitriles to racemic 4-methyl-thiobutanoic acids is performed using nitrilase from Alcaligenes faecalis ATCC-8750 or Rhodococcus sp. HT 29-7 FERM-3857, or Gordana terrae FERM BP-4535 cells. Process is carried out at pH 4-11 and 30-60 C. Concentration α-substituted 4-methylthiobutyronitrile in the parent solution as substrate is 10-400 mmole/l, preferably 50-200 mmole/l. Hydrolysis process occurs without any selectivity with respect to enantiomers formed. EFFECT: improved method of hydrolysis. 6 cl, 1 dwg, 2 tbl, 16 ex
