FIELD: organic chemistry, more particularly synthesis of 4-alkyl-ortho-benzoquinones and 3-bromo-5-alkyl-ortho-benzoquinones. SUBSTANCE: disclosed is method of preparing above-mentioned compounds of formula I: wherein X is H or Br; R is tert--C₄H₉-tert--C₅H₁₁; tert--C₆H₁₃; cyclo--C₆H₁₁ by oxidation of corresponding pyrochatechine, 4-alkylpyrocatechine or 3- bromo-5-alkylpyrocachetin in diethyl ether is stirred in excess amount of 10% aqueous solution of ferric- trichloride at room temperature, water is separated and ferric trichloride is once again added.
