FIELD: powder metallurgy, namely production of powders of refractory compounds on base of titanium carbides or nitrides that may be used for making cutting tools, metallic reinforcement and so on. SUBSTANCE: method for making titanium carbide, oxycarbide, nitride, oxynitride or oxycarbonitride comprising steps of producing particles of titanium oxide with amorphous carbon adsorbed in their surfaces and subsequent carbothermic reduction also includes steps of adding into aqueous solution of titanium sulfate acetylene carbon black at relation Ti+4:cm3 being no less than 1:0.5; then at continuously intensively stirring solution adding to it at rate 1-2 cu. cm/min aqueous solution of ammonia, settling pulp for 10-20 min, decanting solution, filtering deposit, washing it out by water and drying at temperature 200-220 C. EFFECT: possibility of making ultrafine powders of refractory compounds of titanium by simple and safe method providing strict control of carbon quantity. 3 cl, 3 ex
