FIELD: chemical technology. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to production of commercial sodium formate and purified chloroform. Method of simultaneous synthesis of chloroform and sodium formate involves treatment of technical chloral obtained by interaction of ethanol with gaseous chlorine and sodium hydroxide aqueous solution. The end products are isolated by settling and separation of chloroform bottom layer and sodium formate solution upper layer which is subjected for evaporation and drying by heating at required temperature to obtain the commercial sodium formate. In the process of interaction of ethanol with gaseous chlorine the simultaneous chloral distillation off is carried out in fractionating regime. High-boiling components are removed from vat part and subjected for detoxification. Method provides decrease of impurities of crotonaldehyde, polymers of ethylene and other components formed in technical chloral at the stage of chlorination.
