FIELD: industrial organic synthesis. SUBSTANCE: process comprises stepped countercurrent chlorination of ethanol with elementary chlorine. High-density raw material is fed into the first chlorination step and gases released in this step are used to treat lower-density reaction mixture in the next step. Chlorination is carried out in presence of 28-76-% aqueous solution of di- and trichloroacetic acids, proportion of this solution in reaction mixture being 18 to 50%. Chloral is withdrawn from reaction zone with releasing gases, from which the former is separated by condensation. EFFECT: increased degree of ethanol conversion and lowered level of ethanol and its derivatives in product. 5 cl, 1 tbl, 5 ex
