FIELD: detection of diamonds. SUBSTANCE: substance is irradiated with flux of fast neutrons modulated between first and second various energy levels which are correspondingly resonance and non-resonance energy levels for diamond. Corresponding first and second absorption images for substance are generated and third absorption image is obtained from these images in which effects of absorption related to presence of non-diamond substance in rock are removed or at least decreased. Obtained image is later analyzed for presence of diamond in substance. Flux of fast neutrons with modulated energy is generated with use of nuclear reaction between flux of fast neutrons with modulated energy and target. Flux of fast neutrons with modulated energy is generated with use of process in which flux of particles passes in sequence through first and second particle accelerators. Modulation is achieved by operation of second particle accelerator in turn under first and second modes to win from flux of particles fed by first particle accelerator flux of particles that is modulated between relatively high and relatively low energy levels.
