FIELD: metallurgy; treatment of lumpy materials, mainly scrap metal. SUBSTANCE: method includes blowing of melt forming gas lift flow and charging materials in descending flow of melt. Gas lift flow is divided into two descending flows of melt: one flow is directed to lumpy heated material to be immersed in bath. Prior to melting, lumpy material is subjected to heating by waste gases; to this end, fuel is burnt in heating zone. Furnace for melting lumpy materials includes charging chamber with port in upper portion, gas lift chamber with blast units and gas separating chamber formed by partitions not reaching roof and hearth, melt discharge device and port for escape of waste gases. Upper edges of partitions are located at levels not exceeding one another by 0.3 of height of central part of gas lift chamber. Furnace is provided with chamber for preliminary heating of lumpy materials which is communicated with gas separating chamber. Partition separating the gas lift chamber and gas separating chamber is inclined and is provided with baffle plate. Preliminary heating chamber is provided with sluice chamber and fuel burning devices. EFFECT: enhanced efficiency of treatment of lumpy materials and solid scrap metal. 5 cl, 1 dwg
