FIELD: electric power transmission lines. SUBSTANCE: method is used for detection of ground short circuit of failed aerial transmission line, for example, due to ice melting by direct current. Corresponding method involves measuring reactive resistance X of short circuit loop at frequency f and calculation of target distance L as relation of line reactive resistance Y at frequency f. Goal of invention is achieved by additional measurement of complex resistance Z of short circuit loop at frequency f and direct current reactive resistance Rd of loop. Reactive resistance is calculated using recurrent equation where rf is increment of linear active resistance of wire-ground line at frequency f with respect to its direct current value.
