FIELD: nuclear engineering. SUBSTANCE: container has casing accommodating multiple-compartment magazine which is set in concrete and used to receive spent fuel elements, cover placed in its seat in top part of casing, and rigging assemblies; cover is wedged in position; tube is fitted into hole on side wall of casing. Container is prepared for storage as follows: casing holding magazine with spent fuel assemblies is closed with cover, the latter is welded to casing over joint, wedges are installed, container is subjected to strength and tightness tests, evacuated, and its interior is filled with gas; all these operations are made by means of tube fitted into case which is removed upon filling container with gas and sealed. Such container performs protective and immobilizing functions. EFFECT: improved reliability and safety, simplified design, facilitated manufacture and testing of container. 1 cl, 1 dwg
