FIELD: mechanical engineering. SUBSTANCE: method involves rotating two vertical hammer-type rotors in single direction; continuously forcing material from one rotor to the other one, while it is displaced from the top to the bottom, by transmitting to flow of material in annular space around first rotor peripheral speed which is higher than that in annular space around other rotor by arranging hammers on rotors in packs of different outer diameters. Apparatus has material grinding chamber made in the form of two communicated cylinders with upper inlet and lower outlet channels, vertical rotors axially aligned one with respect to the other and provided with hammers arranged in packs along rotors. Packs of hammers of larger and smaller diameters are alternatively arranged along rotors so that pack of larger diameter of one rotor is positioned opposite pack of smaller diameter of other rotor. Inlet channel is positioned above pack of larger outer diameter of hammers, and outlet channel is positioned below pack with smaller outer diameter of hammers.
