FIELD: power engineering, oil and gas producing industry, agriculture, transport. SUBSTANCE: mixture of gaseous fuel and oxidizer are delivered into compression ignition internal combustion engine with excess oxidizer coefficient exceeding 0.8 and is compressed by working member (piston, rotor, etc) to provide self-ignition with formation of combustion products and carrying out of mechanical work. Mixture of gaseous fuel, oxidizer, part of combustion products, water or steam, additions initiating process of self-ignition of fuel mixture and enlarging range of stable burning can be supplied into working space of compression ignition internal combustion engine. Compression ignition internal combustion engine can be furnished with additional fuel mixture ignition system (spark, injection, etc). EFFECT: provision of optimum burning of fuels of any type in gaseous and vapor phase with increase of engine efficiency and power output, reduced concentration of harmful matter in exhaust gases, and thermal and mechanical loads on engine. 20 cl, dwg
