SUBSTANCE: sawdust is used as stuffing medium; resinous agents are removed from sawdust; sawdust loaded in stuffing box chamber embraces member to be sealed; sawdust is pressed by hold- down unit. In the course of operation, sawdust becomes swollen due to impregnation with water, thus providing for tight compression of unit to be sealed and self-restoration of stuffing box seal.
