FIELD: chemical technology. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to industrial production of nitrogen, mainly to catalyst and method of production of nitrogen from ammonia-containing exhausting gas. Catalyst for production of nitrogen from ammonia-containing exhausting gas has metal taken among the group including copper, cobalt, iron, chrome, nickel, manganese and their mixtures as oxides and at least one promoter that are applied on inert carrier. Catalyst has the indicated metals being partially or completely as sulfates formed in the process of contact of exhausting gas with indicated catalyst as oxides at temperature below 500 C in the presence of sulfur volatile compound and metals of platinum group are taken as promoter. Method of production of nitrogen from ammonia-containing exhausting gas involves stages of contact of exhausting gas with catalyst at temperature below 500 C and isolation of the end product by the known procedures.
