FIELD: cleaning gases; desulfurization of gaseous media. SUBSTANCE: method is used for desulfurization of gaseous media containing oxygen, sulfur dioxide, sulfuric anhydride, sulfuric acid, hydrogen sulfide, carbon disulfide, carbonyl sulfide and/or organic sulfur-containing compounds and consists in catalytic oxidation to water, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and sulfuric anhydride which is subjected to hydration and condensation in presence of at least equivalent amount of water steam in said gaseous medium, thus obtaining sulfuric acid vapor; said process is performed in at least two reactors connected in series; each reactor is loaded with immovable layer of inert material below layer of oxidation catalyst and the following operations are performed: change-over of direction of flow of gaseous medium approximately every 1-4 min; maintenance of temperature in oxidation catalyst layers from 300 to 500 C; discharge of gaseous medium from reactors whose temperature is below dew point of sulfuric acid by at least 50 C and drainage of condensate of sulfuric acid from bottom portion of said reactors. Said method enhances efficiency due to regenerative heat exchange together with reaction of oxidation of sulfur dioxide to sulfuric anhydride in gases containing water. EFFECT: enhanced efficiency. 11 cl, 1 dwg
