FIELD: mechanical engineering; manufacturing, maintenance and repair of timing gears. SUBSTANCE: according to proposed method, engine is subjected to decompression and then is cranked at preset speed by external drive, simultaneously measuring changes of angular speed of camshaft (crankshaft) within the limits of complete kinematic cycle, and rigidity of springs is evaluated by changes of amplitudes and phases of angular speed extremums. Decompressed engine is cranked additionally from external drive at the same speed, and changes of angular speed of camshaft (crankshaft) are recorded in degrees of shaft turning angle within the limits of complete kinematic cycle in turn, with intake or exhaust valves closed, which is provided by setting clearances in valve gears exceeding values of valve lift.
