FIELD: synthesis of lower alcohols by direct catalytic hydration of olefins, more particularly preparation of isopropyl alcohol by hydration of propylene. SUBSTANCE: method comprises hydrating propylene at elevated temperature and pressure in reactor filled with strongly acid sulfocationite catalyst by feeding mixture composed of some reaction mixture being recycled, recycled products, water and liquid propylene. Liquid propylene is added to liquid phase flow in amount required to saturate said flow to equilibrium state at temperature and pressure in reactor. Method makes it possible to increase process efficiency at identical temperature and pressure in reactor. EFFECT: more efficient preparation method. 2 cl, 1 fig, 10 ex, 1 tbl
