FIELD: laser engineering; high-power axially excited lasers. SUBSTANCE: laser has rectangular- or elliptical- section tubular excitation chamber, stable-unstable optical resonator whose axis is parallel to that of excitation chamber, and end mirrors. Instability plane of resonator is parallel to longer side (or longer axis of ellipse) of tubular excitation chamber. Size of smaller side (smaller axis of ellipse) is chosen so as to ensure that it will be 1.5-2 times greater than size of main mode in stability plane of resonator. EFFECT: improved quality of laser radiation and efficiency; simplified design. 15 cl, 7 dwg
