FIELD: physics of gas discharge, applicable in plasmachemistry, charged-particle accelerators, in radiation sources and at pumping of active media of gas lasers. SUBSTANCE: method consists in the fact that the substance in a gas phase is excited in the discharge gap by a high- voltage pulse applied to the electrode for propagation of a breakdown wave in it. The substance in a gas phase is excited by branching of the breakdown wave at a distance from the electrode sufficient for formation of its front. EFFECT: enhanced productivity of amplitude-time parameters of radiation of plasma produced by the breakdown wave, enhanced absorption of electromagnetic energy of the exciting pulse by the substance in a gas phase, considerably attenuated part of the high-voltage voltage pulse reflected from the discharge gap. 3 cl, 2 dwg
